SOAR Club First Meeting a Success!
Wednesday, July 1, 2009
The South Oakland Area Republicans held their Inaugural meeting on July 1, 2009 at the American Legion Hall in Berkley. Our first meeting was a tremendous success with 104 freedom-loving people in attendance.
Special guests included Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson and Wendy Day, of the New Patriot Revolution, an organization planning Tea Party activities for Independence Day. Also attending were State Senator Cameron Brown, current Assistant Senate Majority leader and Michigan Secretary of State candidate, David Law, the Oakland County Republican Party Chairman, Paul Welday, candidate for the 9th congressional district, and a representatives from State Attorney General and Gubernatorial candidate Mike Cox, and current Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land’s Office.
Mr. Patterson highlighted Oakland County accomplishments, including a new distinction: the county was recently rated number one by the Center for Digital Government for its embrace of internet technology. In addition, Oakland County has maintained its AAA bond rating. Oakland County is one of 20 of the nation's 3,200 counties with a AAA rating.
Mr. Patterson expressed concerns about the future of Oakland County. Currently, Republicans hold a slim 13-12 edge in county commissioners' seats. Further, Democrats will outnumber Republicans three to two on the board that will draw new lines for those districts to elect a Commissioner in future elections. It is critical, then, that a republican majority be maintained, or increased on the Board of Commissioners. Republicans MUST STAY ACTIVE!
He said Democrats were more energized than Republicans in 2008. Citing Ronald Reagan, Mr. Patterson outlined several conservative principles Republican candidates need to emphasize. Included on that list: smaller, less intrusive government, balanced budgets, lower taxes, individual freedom and personal responsibility, a strong military, support for small business and the free enterprise system, energy independence and the family as the foundation of our nation.
Ms. Day talked about her involvement in the Tea Party movement. She also spoke of her role on the local school board pressed the importance of liberty and personal responsibility. Ms. Day, a successful School Board Candidate in the recent election, described her position as "a pain, but worth it." From her perspective, Ms. Day sees a sizable portion of the state's budget devoted to "training students to be socialists or good global citizens."
State Sen. Cameron Brown, also spoke. He updated those in attendance about the proposed new state police headquarters. An amendment to not fund the headquarters has passed the state senate, but funding remains a possibility, pending House action. Mr. Law shared his commitment to SOAR and the southern portion of the county and noted it as a key area in the 2010 election. Mr. Welday gave a talk on the basics of his campaign principles, and of continuing support for conservative candidates in 2010.
